They grow up so fast
I have read that Pennsylvania is the second oldest state behind Florida. If the number of 65+ year old ladies who chat with me in the grocery store is any indication, then I would have to confirm that statistic. Usually, the ladies talk to the kids first. AJ will usually oblidge them with a smile, but the girls hide in my sweatpants (yes I have given up). Inevitably, my new senior friend will comment on how quickly time goes by and implore me to enjoy this time with the kids. "They grow up so fast." I used to dismiss these remarks. I know, I know. I would think in my head. But now, I KNOW. Where did the time go? How am I the parent of a second grader? I see many parents spend time looking ahead and hoping their children will grow out of whatever stage. Not that I particularly enjoy tantrums, bathroom accidents at theme parks, diaper blowouts at church, biting siblings, and super glue experimentation, but I do love and cherish every stage. I know when the stage has passed; It has passed and part of me always misses it.
The list of things I will miss when my kids are grown is long, indeed. After much thought, I have concluded there are a few things I will NOT miss. And since this list is MUCH shorter, I will share it.
1. Privacy in the bathroom. A bar of soap does not adequately cover up a grown woman. I could do without the questions. "Mommy, why did you light the candle." "Can I have a turn with the plunger."
2.Extensive safety searches. Spending 15 minute trying to locate the paper clip you dropped in the shag carpet. Fruitlessly searching the internet to determine if your houseplants are poisonous. Storing all cleaning supplies in the most remote and inconvient location.
3. I will not miss having to hide in a closet in order to make a phone call.
Customer Service Rep: Hello, PNC Bank.
JL: Good Morning.
CSR: Maam, Could you speak up?
JL: No. I am hiding from my chidren.
CSR: Excuse me?
JL: Nevermind. Can you help me with-----
CSR: Sure. I will need your latest statement.
JL: Um. That is on my kitchen table.
CSR: I can wait.
JL: NO. I can't leave the closet. They will find me.
Other than that, I try to cherish every minute. Even at 3 am.
