Can one convert to Amishdom?
Recently there was a horrifc school massacre in Amish country. As expected, the media carried as many lurid details as they possibly could. In addition, however, I read and watched several reports on forgiveness. CNN, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Fox News, all talking and writing of an age old concept as if it were a novel idea. But, perhaps in our society it is a novel idea. As a culture we demand explanations, we shake our fists, we want "justice." When confronted with the most awful, evil event the Amish community turned their eyes toward heaven and their hearts to forgiveness. And they didn't just say it. Members of the Amish community established a fund for the killer's children. They attended his funeral as a means of supporting his widow. They spoke publically about the goodness of God. Like their way of life, they made it seem so simple. How could it be that simple? Our modern society wants to analyze and debrief. But the Amish did not hesitate. A light shined in the darkness and the darkness was over come.
